IT. IS. FRIDAY, darlings! Spread out and sink in. We’re not moving all day. We have some things to throw at you in order to keep you distracted, but for various reasons, we’re pushing the podcast to Monday. Those of you who have Apple TV+ might want to catch the first two episodes of Cate Blanchett’s new series Disclaimer, because we will be going deep on them in the next pod. Sorry about the delay!

‘Pride and Prejudice’ Series in Development at Netflix From Dolly Alderton
A series based on Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is in development at Netflix, with “Everything I Know About Love” author Dolly Alderton penning the scripts.
There is no cast attached yet and the project has not been greenlit at the streamer. Netflix has a history with Austen, having adapted “Persuasion” for a 2022 movie starring Dakota Johnson.

Mayor of Rome Tells Emmanuel Macron to “Relax” Over ‘Emily in Paris’ Potentially Heading to Italy for Season 5
After the President of France said he would “fight hard” to keep Netflix’s hit comedy from moving to Italy next season, Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri wondered if “there are perhaps a few more pressing issues for the French president.”

The Mayor of Rome has a message for President Emmanuel Macron of France: “You really cannot intimidate or interfere with Netflix production plans for the next season of Emily in Paris. It is just not done,” Roberto Gualtieri tells The Hollywood Reporter Roma.
Gualtieri, a man who says he loves Paris and is great friends with Anne Hidalgo, the Mayor of Paris, was more than a trifle miffed on Wednesday morning when President Macron announced to Variety that he planned to “fight hard” to keep the popular Emily from migrating permanently from the City of Lights to The Eternal City.

Bridgerton meets Pride and Prejudice: Could newly announced BBC drama The Other Bennet Sister offer a modern take on the Jane Austen classic?
The BBC have revealed plans for a Pride and Prejudice spin-off, with Lizzie Bennet’s plain sister Mary making her debut in the glamorous world of Regency London – mark your dance cards and get ready to meet The Other Bennet Sister

Jane Austen could be really quite unkind. While Pride and Prejudice tells one of literature’s most famous love stories (the author herself called Lizzie Bennet as ‘delightful a creature as ever appeared in print’), numerous minor characters are left discarded on the wayside of this generational romance, run down by Austen’s razor sharp wit like a lame fox in front of a horse-drawn carriage.
Take, for example, poor old Mary Bennet. ‘The only plain one in the family,’ Austen barely mentions Mary in the book, making only brief asides to remind readers that Lizzie’s sister possesses ‘neither genius nor taste’, or note how she ‘wished to say something sensible, but knew not how.’ Pedantic, conceited and not particularly bright, Mary Bennet is, writes Charlotte Jones, ‘neglected by her parents and unmarriageable, her silent and futile presence … the best testament possible to the ranks of unremarkable women she stands for.’

Lisa Ann Walter: My Lifelong Fight to Pass the Equal Rights Act
In a deeply personal essay, the Abbott Elementary star opens up about her decades-long fight for equality, and a miscarriage on set that could have cost her her life in a post-Roe America.

Lisa Ann Walter is beloved by millions for her roles on The Parent Trap and Abbott Elementary, but she has always been a passionate advocate for women’s rights. Here she opens up about her years of activism, and why she’ll never stop fighting to pass the Equal Rights Act.
“At my age, I’m in a pretty unique position in that I have young people actually wanting to talk to me.
Not my four children, of course—they only seem to talk to me at midnight when I’m already in bed—but complete strangers talk to me all the time. Because I played a beloved character in Disney’s The Parent Trap and now appear in another beloved television show, the youngs write to me quite a bit. They come to my comedy shows. I talk to them and write them back. I give advice on where to start the journey of a performer, or what’s the best eye cream, or how to come out to their grandma. Important stuff.”

And Now, the Comedy Stylings of Harrison Ford…
The actor says he has played every role for laughs. After Shrinking, people are finally catching on. “I’m a silly person,” Ford insists (probably pointing his finger).

Harrison Ford thinks you have taken him way too seriously over the years. Somehow he developed this reputation for earnest intensity, but he’s not sure how or why that happened. “As far as I’m concerned, everything I’ve ever done is comedy,” he tells Vanity Fair.
Maybe he adamantly pointed his finger one too many times, or maybe his ultra-deadpan delivery was just too persuasive over the years. Consider the inherent absurdity in his most memorable roles: an archaeologist who conducts most of his scholarly research with a bullwhip? A boastful starship captain whose copilot is a giant space ape? A cop who goes undercover to protect an Amish woman and her young son after the son sees a murder? All right, maybe that last one is the exception that proves the rule.

69 best chick flicks to watch on your next girls’ night in
Grab the girlies for a night on the sofa.

Chick flicks are a cinematic genre we’ve grown to appreciate more than ever over the past few years.
In times of uncertainty, sometimes all you need is your best mates, wine and some snacks, a few face masks and a girly film, whether that be a ’90s rom-com or a sad movie to sniffle those woes away to.
But what are the best chick flicks? Looking for a classic? Look no further than our forever-queen Hilary Duff living out a fairytale in A Cinderella Story. For something to leave you feeling empowered, check out Charlie’s Angels with our favourite trio Cameron, Drew and Lucy. There’s also Legally Blonde, of course.

Resistance band leg workouts are affordable while being seriously powerful, too – 5 best for beginners to try
And you won’t have to step a foot outside.

Versatile, lightweight and often hailed as being “less intimidating than lifting weights in the gym,” the best resistance band leg workouts for beginners are a great entry point into the wonderful world of resistance training.
One step up from bodyweight training, these stretchy pieces of fabric can help you master new movement patterns safely before dialling up the weight or resistance. They can also help you supercharge your workout from home (because, have you seen this weather?) or away and there’s research to prove it.

The Noughties teen star renaissance is officially underway
We’re looking at Leighton Meester and her husband, Adam Brody.

Everywhere you look, another Noughties teen star is back on top. While Blake Lively and Michelle Williams have been A-list more or less since their breakout hits, their co-stars’ ascents have been slow but steady for the past 20-ish years. But after some almost-hits and good faith missteps, they’re once again atop the TV pyramid. Millennials, we’re winning.
The number one show on Netflix is Nobody Wants This, a breezy but touching interfaith rom-com starring the always charming Adam Brody (forever The OC’s Seth Cohen in our hearts) and Veronica Mars herself, Kristen Bell. Bell found plenty of movie success post-Veronica (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Frozen), and her NBC show The Good Place was well-received but quickly disappeared from cultural memory.

11 best weighted blankets that’ll guarantee a good night’s sleep
There’s just nothing quite like being swaddled!

Designed to evenly distribute weight across the body, the best weighted blankets promise to help promote feelings of calmness, soothe anxiety, and act as a catalyst for a good night’s sleep. Typically filled with thousands of tiny glass beads that apply pressure to your body, weighted blankets mimic a therapeutic technique called “deep pressure therapy” to boost your mood. Basically, it’s just like receiving a big hug.

Understanding love languages can make your relationship so much easier
How to find yours (and your partners).

Everything changed when I learned about the concept of love languages.
Arguing with my husband is one of my least favourite things to do. That might not sound like a surprise, but, with my slightly fiery temper, fights haven’t always been so unappealing. In fact, in previous relationships I’ve quite welcomed the odd shouting match as a good way to let off some steam, air our differences and – inevitably – kiss and make up afterwards. But it’s different now.

What to do if you think someone you know might have an eating disorder
Warning signs to look out for and advice on what to say.

If you think someone you know might have an eating disorder, it can be a very concerning time. Do you approach them about it? If so, how? What if you say the wrong thing and end up driving them away?
I know how hard eating disorders and disordered eating can be for those closest to you. As someone who’s been open about my history of bulimia and purging disorder – both publicly, through my job as a journalist; and privately, because, well, something about thousands of strangers knowing your innermost battles makes talking to your mates about it comparatively straightforward – I’ve been approached about this topic numerous times. Concerned friends, family members or colleagues who fear that their loved one is developing – or has developed – an unhealthy relationship with food, exercise or body image. Perhaps they’ve lost a lot of weight in a short period of time, their eating habits have changed, or they’ve become socially withdrawn or agitated, particularly around food.

Rafael Nadal Has Announced His Retirement From Tennis
On Thursday morning, the legendary tennis player and 22-time Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal announced his retirement, confirming the news via a video message shared to his social media accounts. The 38-year-old shared he would make his final appearance representing Spain at next month’s Davis Cup Finals in Malaga, following widespread speculation that the 2024 season would be his last, following a series of injuries over the past two years.
“The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially,” he said in the statement. “I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make. But in this life, everything has a beginning and an end, and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined.”

Take a Look Back at Ethel Kennedy’s Remarkable Life in Photos
The Kennedy matriarch passed away this week at the age of 96.

“It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy,” her grandson Joe Kennedy III shared on social media on Thursday, October 10. “She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week. 70 Best Thanksgiving Nails 2024 You’ll Actually Want to Wear
They’ll look perfect with a chunky sweater.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and with it comes Thanksgiving nails. A festive mani is the perfect way to get into the spirit after time spent apart from family, after all. And at the very least, DIY nail art can also serve as a welcome distraction if you’re in need of alone time instead.
The phrase “Thanksgiving nail designs” probably brings tacky turkeys and problematic Pilgrims to mind, but there are plenty of fun ideas that aren’t quite as literal. Think warm tones that mirror the falling leaves, designs inspired by Thanksgiving staples like cranberry sauce or squash, or even some glitter for that festive feeling. They’re as cozy as your favorite Thanksgiving songs. And yes, we were able to track down some cute pumpkin (and turkey!) nail designs for the traditionalists out there.
Whatever your style, we’ve got you and your nails covered (and painted) Scroll on for the coolest Thanksgiving nails to try this year.

Molly Shannon on Mary Katherine Gallagher and 25 Years of Superstar
When Mary Katherine Gallagher made her Saturday Night Live debut in 1995, the character was an immediate sensation. A nerdy Catholic schoolgirl with severe stage fright and big showbiz dreams, she made more than 18 appearances during Molly Shannon’s original tenure on the show. While her antics varied from sketch to sketch—one day, she was auditioning for her high school talent show; the next, she was hiding in musical guest Tina Turner’s dressing room—you could always count on Gallagher to break into a monologue from one of her favorite made-for-TV movies or crash into a stack of folding chairs.
“Mary is very much an exaggerated version of myself and how I really felt as a little girl: anxious, over-dramatic, accident-prone,” Shannon tells Vogue. “It was nice to have people respond to this character that really came from my heart.”

Lovers of Vintage Kitsch, Rejoice! The Lenox Spice Village Is Back
People always ask me what my vintage white whale is. And while a piece from Vivienne Westwood’s 1993 Anglomania show or a 1950s James Cavanagh brocade silk evening dress would be nice—yes, I’m on the hunt—what I’ve always dreamed of finding is the Lenox Spice Village.
First released in 1989 by New Jersey-based Lenox (which has also made presidential china for Wilson, Roosevelt, Truman, Reagan, Clinton, and Bush, as well as the 2019 Met Gala), the dollhouse-like collection was made of 24 hand-decorated canisters, each meant to house the most popular cooking spices of the era.

40 Scary Movies for Kids Who Want an Intro to Horror Films
For a family-friendly scary movie night, these are the best flicks to watch with kids of all ages.

While research says it’s OK for parent to expose their kids to frightful things, they should do so under the right conditions. Whether your child wants to go to a haunted house, read scary stories or watch a horror movie, it’s important to find age-appropriate options. When it comes to the best scary movies for kids, you might pick a family-friendly Halloween movie or one of the many Disney Halloween movies.
We have plenty of those on our list, including animated options with cartoons just ghoulish enough for dipping a toe into the scary waters. Others are classic horror films that may evoke nostalgia in adults who want to relive those childhood thrills. Most of our selections are PG, but we included a few PG-13 choices so tweens and teens can enjoy jump scares that are more in line with their age.

Your Favorite Horror Movie Was a Much Scarier True Story
From “The Exorcist” to “The Lighthouse,” many lauded scary movies were based on terrifying true stories. Here’s what really happened.

We’re in the Spooky Season. Halloween costume shops have taken over vacant buildings, “Monster Mash” is on our playlists and, best of all, horror flicks are waiting to be watched.
When we terrify ourselves with scary movies, we calm back down with the reminder: It’s not real, it’s not real, it’s not real. Except … when it is.
Some of the most popular movies in the genre are based, with varying accuracy, on true stories. In many cases, the real story is even scarier than Hollywood’s rendition.

“I Like to Be Alone on Stage”: 15 Minutes With Isabelle Huppert
Few match Isabelle Huppert’s devotion to the screen and stage. Known for playing ambitious, often morally ambiguous characters with an uncanny ability to hide their emotions, the French actor is an expert in subtleties. But off-screen, she’s best described as a passionate advocate of the arts. Huppert owns two theaters in Paris, and this year, headed up the Venice Film Festival Jury for the very first time. Of course, you may remember the actor for her groundbreaking performances in transgressive dramas like The Piano Teacher and Elle, but the screen legend is equally captivating in independent, philosophical films, like her most recent collaboration with South Korean director Hong Sang-soo, whose latest film A Traveler’s Needs premiered at NYFF last week. To learn more, we met Huppert for a morning coffee at L’Alliance New York to talk ambiguity, intuition, and loneliness.

If you’re looking for some new ways to shake up your meals, try sorghum. What is sorghum you might ask? It’s a grain like millet or fonio which can be cooked in many different ways, is packed with protein, and well worth discovering—or rediscovering, as the case may be. We caught up with a sorghum farmer and a nutrition expert to learn more about sorghum’s incredible versatility and health benefits.

A Rare Painting Purchased for Just $50 May Actually Be Worth Up to $147,000
The original Emily Carr outwork was purchased at a barn sale in Long Island, New York.

A piece of art purchased for just $50 earlier this year was later identified as an original painting by Canadian artist Emily Carr. Next month, the artwork is expected to sell for upwards of $147,000 at an auction.
The painting was discovered by art dealer, Allen Treibitz, who found it while shopping a barn sale in Long Island, New York. The painting, titled “Masset, Q.C.I.,” is of a carved bear standing on top of an indigenous memorial totem pole. “You could just tell that painting had something special about it,” Treibitz told Global News. “It definitely had a look, and it was definitely very interesting.”
